• Prospective client: $400 for a logo?! Why are you so expensive? My nephew has Photoshop—I can just get him to do it.
  • Me: Does your nephew have Microsoft Word?
  • Prospective client: Yes.
  • Me: Then have him write you a novel while he’s at it.

Art Institute of San Fransisco

mymydinh:

I really wasn’t planning to apply there. There’s no way I could pay off their tuiton, I’d have to go under one hell of a student loan. And when I do pay it off after college, I’m going to be doing it for the rest of my life.

But they keep emailing me, and calling me.. and really. What do I have to lose by applying? It’s not even for sure that I would get accepted. I need some kind of back-up if I don’t get accepted into CSU Long Beach, besides community college. I don’t want to be captivated in Fresno for a few more years.. I want to be able to explore the world around me, well.. I want to be able to explore California.

I’m going to go for it. Wish me luck.

I got in and one of my biggest regrets ever is not going. Take the big chances!

p.s.

I really didn’t try to be a negative ahole in that last post. And quite honestly there are a LOT of really good aspiring photographers out here even just on tumblr. My point wasn’t to bash anyone, but to bash the thought that there should be some sort of “right” earned to have an slr and shoot it.

I guess my main thing was that I totally disagree with any form of discouragement to aspiring photographers, whether their parents bought their slr or not.

What crossed my mind this afternoon

How people can have their parents buy them a dslr and then all of a sudden they’re into photography. I know it’s fun taking photos with a big camera but c’mon do you know anything about photography other than knowing to how click the damn button. Another thing is that I sense there’s no meaning behind their photos, they take it cause it’s cute or they only do it for publicity like tumblr, or myspace. Where’s the genuine love for it?

I understand what you’re saying right here. But, hey, we all have dslrs. You have one too. You like to take pictures. I like to take pictures. I have two. I show my pictures on tumblr, so that I can look back at it, and remember how I took that picture, which setting I used, and to show the other good photographers that’s following me that I am one of the aspiring photographer out there. But hey, I got what you mean, though. It does sometimes, bugs me that girls get their cameras, lens, and all that, whenever they can, while I have to earn it.

How do you think ANY great musician should when they see the same teenage morons picking up a guitar in an attempt to look cool and ending up sounding like crap or the same untalented people doing jason mraz covers on youtube? I think the thing that makes the artist good is if they are freaking self confident enough to not worry about everyone and their mom (literally) owning a dslr nowadays. So what if their parents bought it for them? The very immaturity that frustrates you is displayed to everyone else by the tantrum thrown about how “unfair” life is. I’m not picking a fight at all and quite honestly, I struggle with seeing my dashboard FLOODED with dutch angles and poorly converted BW, but I think the sign of a better photographer is to not be swayed by the trend but to do it because YOU love it and to put something GOOD out there by your standards. who cares what bandwagon teenage girls are hopping on?

We ALL don’t go through some sort of super elitist pretentious phase over one thing or another, just like we ALL were posers and pretended to be “in” on something at one point in our lives.

rant over. Sorry.
